The Missouri Tigers bolstered their wide receiver position group with the addition of Florida transfer Naeshaun Montgomery over the weekend.
Montgomery becomes the third WR commitment via the transfer portal this offseason, joining Cincinnati’s Caleb Goodie and Auburn’s Horatio Fields.
Just like Goodie and Fields — Montgomery will have multiple seasons of eligibility (four) as Eli Drinkwitz and the staff are looking to build a more dynamic offense around Austin Simmons.
After his freshman season with
the Gators — Montgomery only appeared in four games which resulted in a redshirt. He had just three receptions for 26 yards in four games.
Missouri was able to win this recruiting battle over notable power conference programs like Washington, Pittsburgh, and UCLA.
What can Naeshaun Montgomery bring to the table at Mizzou?
Where He Fits
Depth in the wide receiver room, and that’s never a bad thing. Though after a season where he didn’t receive a whole lot of playing time at Florida — it may be difficult for Montgomery to get a starting spot. He’ll most likely fit at the slot position.
When He’ll Play
Montgomery has the potential to play right away even though he might not end up being a starter next season. Finding the right role for him will be important however because the talent is there for him to produce and Mizzou will need the wide receiver depth in some key moments. The non-conference and early portion of the season will be important if Simmons and Montgomery can develop chemistry.
What It Means
This is a high upside play and a potential over production type move. Montgomery was previously rated as a four-star, top-2oo recruit coming out of high school and there’s a reason why several power conference schools heavily recruited him. If the talent all comes together, this can be an underrated pickup for Eli Drinkwitz and the staff.
In the end, Montgomery should benefit from transferring to Missouri with a change of scenery. Sometimes it’s good for player to just get away from his home-state school.
