We continue our Dallas Cowboys training camp prediction series, and today we land on one of the most explosive, deep and capable position groups of any team in the NFL – the wide receivers.
Of course, Cowboys fans understand just how good this position group was last year and that there is still potential for growth. Although most of the series thus far has been about who will step up, for this position group, which is deep and full of playmakers, the reality is that some guys just won’t be good enough
to make the cut. Unfortunately for Jonathan Mingo, he will likely be on the way out once camp and the preseason conclude.
Prediction: Jonathan Mingo will not make the roster
Mingo is currently sitting in the same spot as fellow receivers KaVontae Turpin and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, which is beyond the top three receivers – CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, and Ryan Flournoy. Now, obviously, part of this prediction must consider how many WRs Dallas is going to carry into the season, but even if the Cowboys decide to carry six or more receivers, Mingo’s path onto the roster is difficult.
Positionally, ahead of him are Turpin and Valdes-Scantling, both of whom have something Mingo does not: a touchdown in the NFL. That, along with Turpin’s ability in the return game and Valdes-Scantling’s contributions over his soon-to-be nine-year career, puts Mingo in an uphill battle. At the same time, Mingo is trending in the wrong direction in virtually every statistical category. Since his rookie season, the number of targets, receptions and yards have declined every single year. Last year he played in six games and caught one pass for 25 yards.
Mingo, however, is the youngest of the receivers mentioned, and his physical ability will give him a shot to crack the 53-man roster, but if the Cowboys decide to carry only five receivers this year, it will be an uphill battle for the 25-year-old receiver.
Will Mingo make it? Who do you have down as the Cowboys WRs coming out of camp?
