I sort of thought that Craig Breslow would be done trading for the day after the Adley Rutschman deal. Not because he filled all the Sox’ holes, but because the return for Rutschman was so big that the Sox didn’t really have any prospects left to deal.
Well, I was wrong.
Say goodbye to Tyler Uberstine, an interesting post-Tommy John pitching prospect who is already 27 years old and projects as a reliever with the slight chance of sticking as a starter at the back end of the rotation. Say hello to Eli
White, a 32-year-old fourth outfielder most known for the time he fell down rounding first, slid well short of second base, and made it in there safely anyway:
It’s not clear to me what White brings to the Red Sox. He’s a career .212/.270/.353 hitter with 25 homers in parts of 7 seasons. He has good speed but it’s never really translated into big stolen base numbers. And while he’s a good defensive outfielder, he’s not quite elite. I’m not exactly going to miss Uberstine, on the other hand, but there was a chance he could have contributed to the bullpen this season.
This can only be one of those moves that leads to another…
