Good morning, Broncos Country.
The Denver Broncos have gone through their fair share of ups and downs to start their 2026 gridiron campaign. Nevertheless, the team touts a 6-2 record and has continued its penchant for gutting out close games and embarking on miraculous fourth quarter comebacks.
This Sunday, the Broncos will battle the Carolina Panthers. Carolina are currently the leaders of the NFC South despite a 3-4 record. Some have pegged this as a “trap” game. Though yesterday after practice, quarterback Bo Nix dismissed that
notion. He chimed in about the importance of their Week 9 matchup versus the Panthers and how Denver has gotten so good at being able to refocus after big wins.
“It starts with Coach. Coach Payton is really good at that. He talks about every game in the NFL is an important game. There’s no such thing as a trap game because they’re all that way. They’re all must-wins. If you don’t play well, you’re going to end up messing around and getting beat,” stated Nix.
“We know the importance of this week right before the Bye Week. We can’t go on a Bye early. This is a really important game for where we want to go. As captains and as leaders, it’s just all about practice. Details have to go up a notch, as if it isn’t already. More attention to detail, more communication. If you do everything a little bit more and maximize your time this week, I think we’ll be in a good spot.”
The Broncos are the top team in the AFC West. They currently hold the second seed in the AFC playoff race thanks to performing better than the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are also 6-2, in conference games. Eight teams in the conference have at least five wins. For the first half of the season, I certainly didn’t imagine things being this close across the board.
Nix is right. Denver’s Week 9 matchup is extremely important. Going into the bye riding a five-game winning streak and being 7-2 is a lot better than the alternative. Even though the Panthers are losers of two in a row and struggling on both sides of the ball, the Broncos can’t afford to underestimate them.
They’ve proven to be a consistent offense that is Top 10 in many metrics. Carolina has a strong running game and quarterback Bryce Young has done a great job getting numerous players involved in the passing game. Denver’s defense will have to find a way to limit their impact.
Meanwhile, the offense will have to continue to get better. We’ve seen some promise and flashes from Nix the past two games. Yet there is still much work to be done and plenty of room for improvement. He noted that getting better on third downs while continuing to maximize their opportunities in the red zone will be critical to achieve a victory on Sunday. If they can do that, Denver is going to be in a great position heading into their bye.
