SITE NOTE 1: As is traditional here at BCB for doubleheaders, there will be only one StoryStream with all the threads for both games. The game preview for Game 2 will post at 5:30 p.m. CT and will contain a brief summary of Game 1 and all the lineups, pitchers, etc. for Game 2. A full recap of both games of the doubleheader will post at 8 a.m. CT tomorrow.
SITE NOTE 2: “Three up, three down,” a weekly review of Cubs players, which usually runs Monday morning, will instead run tomorrow because of the
doubleheader.
Tom Cosgrove will be the 27th man for today’s doubleheader.
Tuesday notes:
- THE SUN WILL COME OUT, MAYBE: Game 1 of today’s doubleheader will be the Cubs’ 27th weekday afternoon game of the season, but their first on a Tuesday. They are 15-11 in the previous weekday matinees, including 8-8 at home. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- POWER OUTAGE: The Cubs have not hit a home run in four consecutive games, their longest homerless streak of the season. Last year, May 18-25, they hit no homers in six straight games, their longest drought since they went eight games June 23-July 1, 2015. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- TUESDAY AFTERNOON: The last time the Cubs played a day game on a Tuesday was Aug. 23, 2022, when they played a day/night doubleheader against the Cardinals, in which they won, 2-0, and lost, 13-3. Attendance was 27,273 for the first game and 28,163 for the second. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- SOME RELIEF, ANYWAY: Drew Pomeranz, last nine appearances since July 25: 0.00 ERA (8 innings), 1.125 WHIP, nine strikeouts.
- THIS DAY IN CUBS HISTORY: The Cubs homered seven times (Glenn Beckert, Johnny Callison, Jim Hickman twice, Fergie Jenkins, Joe Pepitone and Billy Williams) and crushed the Padres 12-2. The seven homers remained the franchise record until it was broken July 4, 2025. The seven-homer fun happened 55 years ago today, Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1970.
Cubs lineup:
Brewers lineup:
Matthew Boyd, LHP vs. Chad Patrick, RHP

Matthew Boyd allowed the Brewers five runs in five innings July 28 in Milwaukee.
Since then, he has a 2.37 ERA in three starts this month, with only one walk in 19 innings. Last time out he allowed the Blue Jays just two hits (and two runs) in seven innings.
Go get ‘em, Matt.
Chad Patrick is the Brewers’ 27th man for the doubleheader, as he was Monday. He’s a rookie this year and posted a 3.52 ERA in 19 appearances (18 starts) before being sent down when Brandon Woodruff, who will start Game 2, was activated.
Must be nice.
Patrick allowed the Cubs four runs in five innings June 17 at Wrigley Field (including a home run by Seiya Suzuki), and believe it or not, the Cubs actually won that game. Maybe again today. Who knows?

Today’s game is on Marquee Sports Network. You can find out if Marquee is available via a provider in your area here.

The 2025 Game Thread procedure will be identical to last year’s.
You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).
At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page, titled “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of week/date) game threads.” It will contain every post related to that particular game, including the First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread, as well as the recap when it’s published. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post.
You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). The StoryStream for each game can also be found in that section.
The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at 90 minutes after the scheduled game time.
Discuss amongst yourselves.
