Less than an hour before the transfer portal officially opens, BYU had its first entrant announce Monday night. Freshman big man Xavion Staton will enter the transfer portal after one season in Provo, 247 Sports’ Travis Branham reports.
Staton was
a big recruit for BYU in the 2025 class, ranked a 4-Star prospect and top 40 player in the class. Staton was expected to be a developmental piece, and didn’t get any meaningful minutes year one. BYU paid a fair amount for Staton, and now he will head elsewhere his second year. Staton is from Las Vegas and the hometown Rebels could be a possible destination.
Staton played in 9 games for BYU, scoring 5 points and recording 5 blocks. He played 8 minutes in the UConn game after Keba Keita went out early, scoring 3 points and grabbing two boards. Staton could be eligible to receive a medical redshirt due to the amount of games he played and injury issues he faced.
The transfer portal officially opens at midnight eastern once the calendar turns to April 7. Players have through April 21 to submit their name in the portal. I expect multiple more BYU players to enter the portal during that time.
