Newcastle United’s search for attacking reinforcements is continuing into the final hours of the summer transfer window, despite the Magpies having already landed their No. 1 target at forward in Lille’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo.
That move apparently has not stopped the club from exploring other forwards.
According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Newcastle is also considering a late move for Bayer Leverkusen striker Christian Kofane.
“Chelsea, Aston Villa and Newcastle are exploring late moves for
highly-rated Bayer Leverkusen forward Christian Kofane before the close of the transfer window as they look to bolster their attacking options,” O’Rourke reported.
The three Premier League clubs are all considering moves before Tuesday’s deadline, with Football Insider reporting that the situation could potentially go “right down to the wire.”
Kofane would represent a very different attacking profile from Fernandez-Pardo. The 20-year-old Cameroon international is primarily a center-forward and joined Leverkusen after previously playing for Spanish side Albacete. His debut Bundesliga campaign produced seven goals and six assists, and Kofane has already started the new season impressively. The forward has come off the bench and scored in both of Leverkusen’s competitive matches so far.
That form has increased his reputation considerably, with Kofane’s market value estimated at €40 million. O’Rourke described the striker as “extremely highly-rated” by the German club and an important part of its long-term plans.
O’Rourke did not report a potential fee or indicate that Newcastle has submitted an offer, so this remains an exploratory pursuit rather than an advanced transfer, and with the deadline just a few hours ago, it sounds like more of a future option than an imminent possibility.
