The Washington Commanders hosted the Miami Dolphins at Northwest Stadium last Friday and got their first win of the (pre)season. Jayden Daniels didn’t play last week, but could play a series or two vs the Detroit Lions on Saturday. He was taking a lot of snaps in practice this week, with the defense prepping him for Detroit. Daniels only played one series in last year’s preseason, but he was shut down at the end of the season after coming back from another injury.
The Commanders won’t have Marcus
Mariota to carry the majority of snaps today due to an MCL sprain from the Dolphins game. They will also be missing several key players on offense and defense who are nursing injuries. Nick Allegretti was projected to be the new starting center, but he was injured on Day 1 of training camp, and sidelined again when he came back to practice and experienced soreness in his strained calf. That means Jayden Daniels won’t get playing time with his center until the season starts, if Allegretti is healthy by then.
Head coach Dan Quinn said the team planned to play some of their starters in Detroit after sitting most of them in the first week. This will be the only actions some of them get with the the team before they open the season on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Commanders have two first-time play-callers on offense and defense, and this gives them another test run before the bullets start flying in real games. David Blough is bringing in an offense that pulls from several other coaches like Ben Johnson, Kliff Kingsbury, and Sean McVay. Daronte Jones is bringing his version of the Brian Flores defense he helped run in Minnesota.
