The 2027 NFL Draft is still roughly a year away, but it has become one of the most anticipated classes in recent memory. The class features top-end talent at quarterback and receiver, headlined by Texas quarterback Arch Manning and Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith. Smith, in particular, is already a player whose name is in the company of players like Ja’Marr Chase, Julio Jones, and Calvin Johnson when discussing top-ranked prospects entering the league. A draft filled with offensive talent is especially
important to a team like the Steelers, which still needs to add more offensive firepower, even after an overhaul this past offseason.
Dane Brugler of The Athletic not only has the Steelers picking inside the top 10 in his 2027 early mock draft, but he has them taking one of the biggest rising talents at the quarterback position at the college level in Oklahoma State’s Drew Mestemaker.
8. Pittsburgh Steelers: Drew Mestemaker, QB, Oklahoma State
“A former walk-on, Mestemaker put himself on the NFL radar with his performance at North Texas last season. Now at Oklahoma State (with the same coaching staff), he has an ascending skill set that has scouts highly intrigued.”
In his redshirt freshman season in 2025, Mestemaker threw for 4,379 yards and 34 touchdowns, earning the American Conference Offensive Player of the Year. His 4,379 passing yards were the most in the nation, to go along with a nation-leading 9.5 yards per attempt.
Mestemaker’s arm talent is something to behold. The first throw in the video above almost doesn’t look real. Mestemaker is an incredibly creative passer who moves well on the run. His mechanics can get out of control at times, but that is to be expected with someone with one season of college football under their belt. The fact that Mestemaker is as accurate and dynamic as he is as a walk-on makes him one of the best stories in college football.
North Texas went 12-2 overall last season and had the best passing attack in the nation. This outstanding season led to head coach Eric Morris accepting the head coach job at Oklahoma State. Mestemaker entered the portal to follow coach Morris to Oklahoma State. Now, Mestemaker will have a chance to prove his talents against stiffer competition in the Big 12 Conference and solidify himself as one of the premier prospects in the 2027 quarterback class.
