When the Green Bay Packers take the field in September for the start of the regular season, they will have a new starting left tackle. With Rasheed Walker moving on in free agency, the team is finally going to hand the reins over to former first-round draft pick Jordan Morgan, who has more time at guard as a pro than he has at tackle.
Still, left tackle should be Morgan’s best position. That statement is based not only on his college experience and his overall athletic profile, but also on how he
has performed when actually playing the position. It has been a fairly small sample size to this point, but when he has been protecting Jordan Love’s blind side, he has been pretty good.
The Packers need Morgan to step up into the starting role, because there are few options down the depth chart behind him. Green Bay might have something with one of their undrafted rookies, but it’s far too early to expect or even begin to evaluate those players. Of course, the Packers have had a ton of success developing undrafted offensive linemen in the past — in fact, offensive line is arguably where the team has had the most success in the last 30-plus years.
Indeed, you can build a solid starting five from UDFA players that have come through Green Bay just in the past 15 years or so. It would be nice if one of this year’s group of undrafted linemen can end up with a career that resembles the likes of Yosh Nijman, Lane Taylor, or Don Barclay, for example.
Along with this look at Morgan, that’s the big takeaway from this morning’s Cheese Curds.

Morgan’s pass blocking stats at tackle are great, at least on an overall efficiency basis. Judging his run blocking is tougher, but he had a much better PFF grade at tackle than he did at guard.
