45+2’ – KDH zips down the left and his cutback comes perfectly to Armstrong, and he sidefoots it inexplicably wide when completely unmarked. Goodness kid, that’s just not good enough.
Halftime whistle goes, 0-0 but Everton will be ruing missing a couple of really good chances.
45+1’ – Joelinton loses the ball near his own box and George fizzes a cross in, and JOB overlapping at the far post gets his head to it but can’t turn it in as it skids past him.
45’ – Cross into the Mags box and Barry goes up
high over Hall, heads it back down but again no Blues nearby to take advantage. Brooks blows his whistle for a possible head injury to Hall who has stayed down. Two-plus minutes to be added on.
42’ – Dewsbury-Hall breaks out the Everton half on a counter and is fouled by Schar, but gets up and continues, and then Rohl is fouled by Hall and Brooks has had enough. Branthwaite flicks the ball forward but it gets away from Barry, goalkick.
40’ – Magpies hold the ball for a bit, Garner nips in to steal it, comes to George and he dallies too long on it on the edge of the defensive third. It comes to Joelinton and he sizzles a shot over.
38’ – Barnes cuts in and crosses again, goes off Branthwaite and lobs up into the air and Pickford puts it over the bar for a corner. Put on the penalty spot and the Blues clear.
35’ – JOB nicks the ball off Hall and makes a bit of a run before losing the ball to Hall, and then gives him a forearm shiver to the back of the neck and the Toon army howls. Ref John Brooks gives JOB a talking to, but nothing else.
32’ – The natives are getting very restless at SJP as Everton have been looking very comfortable here.
Burn stamps on Barry just outside the box and he will go in the book. Freekick from about twenty yards out, a shade left of the middle. Garner and KDH in the vicinity, it’s Garner and he puts it right into the wall and cleared.
31’ – Magpies make a rare foray into the Everton box and KDH hoofs it away, with Schar then dragging Barry down for a foul in the middle of the pitch.
Barry flicks finds KDH in space, he tries to pass to Rohl but cleared.
28’ – Everton still camped around the Toon box, and KDH on the Blues’ right now sets up JOB for a cross, deep, and Barry attempts a flying scissor-kick that he doesn’t really make contact with. Not lacking in confidence despite all his misses eh?
26’ – Lovely diagonal from Tarky finds George and he collects very well, cuts in and lets fly from distance, way over.
Barnes misplaces a pass and Branthwaite sets KDH off and running, George with a lovely cross into the box just over Barry’s head.
23’ – Joelinton fouls Garner and Everton have an opportunity to put the ball into the box now. It was a high line and Branthwaite does brilliantly to win the ball and it falls to Barry who swings at it.. and misses, fouling Osula in the process and the chance is gone.
21’ – George does well to beat Dedic and his cross falls to Armstrong, he can’t control it but it rolls to Barry, he finds Rohl in space and the German takes a pop but it flies over with Hornicek well positioned.
17’ – Joelinton swivels and shoots from outside the box, Tarky puts it out for a corner on the Everton left. Swung deep, and Burn gets ahead of Vitaliy Mykolenko with both falling, and the Toon player puts it wide.
Straight away Everton attack and Rohl with a good cross but no blue shirts close to the ball, pass from Harrison Armstrong goes out for a goalkick.
14’ – Toffees build down the left through George, but he fouls Elanga.
Now Joelinton wins a freekick from the long clearance after getting flung down to the ground by Garner. Ball delivered into the Everton box, overhit and out.
10’ – Everton try to play out the back but Newcastle’s press keeps them hemmed in and Pickford has to try long clearance, ends up in an Everton throw.
Barnes breaks on the left, finds Osula who comes in and tries to cross, deflected off James Tarkowski and Pickford collects.
7’ – Barnes cuts in and beats O’Brien, and his right-footed inswinging cross swerves wickedly past the far post, Pickford was at full stretch for that one.
Oooh! KDH corrals a bouncing ball and almost finds Barry in space but the ball gets away from the striker.
5’ – JOB with a second chance to cross the ball into the box, and neither have been impressive. The second one almost works out as the clearance falls to Garner, but the contact on the volley is poor and the ball bounces harmlessly out.
3’ – Long goalkick from Jordan Pickford and Tyrique George does well to win it. The Blues hold the ball in the Toon half before ref John Brooks calls for a foul.
1’ – James Garner gets us underway at St. James’ Park!
Jake O’Brien and Merlin Rohl combine down the right and the lanky defender is fouled. Deep ball into the box for Thierno Barry but he is called for a foul.
Both squads are out on the pitch and Everton will be in their home all-blue kits. A moment of silence for Remembrance Day is marked, with both teams wearing the red poppy on their shirts.
Starting Lineups
Everton – Jake O’Brien back to his right back slot with Harrison Armstrong returning to the midfield as well.
Newcastle – Jaissle makes a couple of changes to the side with Joelinton, Willock and Elanga starting the game.
Match Preview
Everton are back to league action in tonight’s Monday night game against a very familiar opponent in Newcastle United. The Blues dumped the Magpies out of the Carabao Cup on Thursday night, with the game ending on a bad-tempered note and fisticuffs are likely to be on the cards tonight at St. James’ Park too.
The Toffees have some internal issues to deal with after Jack Grealish being suspended internally following a disciplinary issue, and he will be out for this game as well having missed the last game at Hill Dickinson Stadium too. Jarrad Branthwaite has been on concussion protocol following his collision with Emiliano Martinez in the defeat against Chelsea, but has resumed training.
David Moyes has come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks as Everton have frittered away a positive start to the season. After picking up two wins and three draws in their first five games of the campaign to sit as high as fifth, the Toffees are coming off two straight 2-0 defeats and have slipped down to 14th place. That said, the compacted nature of the table means a win tonight will see them leapfrog the Toon and go into 7th.

The Blues just beat Newcastle in the Carabao Cup having sped to a 3-0 lead in the second half before the visitors pulled one back late in the game. Everton won on their last trip to St. James’ Park as well, winning 3-2 in the game remembered best for Jordan Pickford’s remarkable save on a Sandro Tonali screamer late on to preserve the victory behind goals from Jarrad Branthwaite, Beto and Thierno Barry.
