The build-up…
It’s that time of year that as a kid I used to love – FA Cup third round weekend. Now that might be a clue as to what age/generation I am, because I’m not sure it’s the same now.
Whether it’s the lack of giant killing, or the Champions League gaining traction (i.e. prize money) or the fact that half the Premier League could qualify for one of the European competitions, or we could simply blame Manchester United for just not bothering a quarter of a century ago – but the fact is, it’s just lost a bit of that magic.
But, after midweek it feels like the distraction of the FA Cup couldn’t have better timing for both clubs.
Our midweek trip to Brentford was strange. The performance wasn’t that different from what we’ve seen in a few away fixtures recently, such as Brighton and Spurs. We stayed in the game and waited for our chance – something we’ve been good at taking advantage of, but on this occasion, we didn’t take the chance and collapsed in on ourselves afterwards.
Everton probably thought they’d have a comfortable evening entertaining Premier League whipping boys Wolves, but the visitors claimed their seventh point of the season, and it could/should have been more after Everton went down to nine men in the later stages.
It was only four years ago when we were getting knocked out in the first round before the festive season by Mansfield Town and we haven’t had much luck in the FA Cup in recent years, having just got past the third round once in the last ten years, but this weekend a fifth of Premier League clubs will exit the competition and with the league table shaping up the way it is we’d all enjoy a good cup run.
The betting…
The bookies have the Lads at 23/10 to win the game, while Everton are priced at 23/20, and the draw is 2/1.
