With Barcelona having clinched back-to-back La Liga titles with three games to spare, much of the conversation is about what’s happening in the summer as Hansi Flick’s side look to make moves in the market to improve the squad next season.
Marcus Rashford’s future is very much up in the air as the Englishman’s loan deal comes to an end this month, and the negotiations with Manchester United to agree either a second loan or a permanent transfer will be fascinating.
Rashford has made it clear he wants
to stay, and Hansi Flick was asked about the winger at a press conference on Tuesday. The coach was full of praise for Rashford’s contributions, but said his situation will be decided in the upcoming months.
“In the end, we’ll analyze everything. Marcus has given us a lot. Great numbers. I really appreciate him.“
Barça already know the price to sign Rashford on a permanent deal: €30 million plus his salary, which is far from cheap. His numbers are certainly great, especially given his role as a backup for the majority of the season, but questions about his overall contributions remain and Barça are still debating whether to bring in a cheaper wing option to use more funds in other positions.
It’s not an easy decision, and it’s hard to know right now which direction Flick and Deco will choose when it comes to Rashford. The goals and assists are guaranteed; the pressing and intensity, not quite. €30 million is not bad in today’s market, but Barça aren’t exactly swimming in cash.
Tough call.
