Bayern Munich just extended Dayot Upamecano’s contract through 2030.
Yes, the club has penned down one of the world’s best center-backs to a long-term extension. Which begs the question —is Bayern’s defensive squad planning complete?
According to a certain board member for sport Max Eberl, perhaps not.
When asked in an interview if the squad planning in central defense is complete (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Eberl responded, “We’ve reached a point where we’re not under pressure regarding squad planning.
We can calmly decide what happens next.” Upon further questioning on whether FC Bayern would first have to create space before pursuing other options like Yann Aurel Bisseck, Nico Schlotterbeck, or Luka Vušković, Eberl revealed, “Of course, we’re still keeping an eye on the market. We certainly won’t rule out any option that would benefit FC Bayern.”
BFW Analysis
Well played, Eberl, well played.
This is the equivalent of “we will neither confirm nor deny the possibility.”
Bayern has a strong CB core of Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah, with Kim Min-jae and Hiroki Itō as excellent options to rotate with. However, with Kim potentially leaving in the summer, it makes sense that Bayern is scouring the transfer market and lying in wait to pounce at the right option when the opportunity presents itself.
All aforementioned names in the interview are top CBs and would only bolster the squad further if signed. Bayern might be well equipped at CB this season, but that doesn’t mean that a Nico Schlotterbeck signing isn’t looming on the horizon.
Keep your eyes peeled, folks. This story could have developments.
