Yesterday was Indigenous People’s Day, a nationally recognized holiday that started as a counter-celebration to Columbus Day.
Last year, Jacob Tobey joined the Spurs broadcast team. Tobey is member of the Mashpee
Wampanoag Tribe located predominantly in Massachusetts and Eastern Rhode Island.
This year the Spurs signed Lindy Waters III, whose background includes both Kiowa and Cherokee tribes.
The two spoke yesterday in Indianapolis regarding the holiday.
San Antonio seems like the perfect place for both Tobey and Waters considering the Spurs penchant for bringing players from all over the globe and not embracing their culture, but helping to introduce that culture throughout the community.
I instantly think of Patty Mills and how I was introduced to a part of the world I’ve never seen.
Hopefully, there will be more opportunities for both to share about their culture, traditions, and heritage.
