Welcome to the FC Bayern Campus Round Up, where the matches of Bayern Munich’s U-23 and U-17 squads are recapped, line ups are provided and the highlights to the matches are hyperlinked on top of their respective score line. The U-19 squad did not play a match ahead of their UEFA Youth League match midweek. Remember, highlights for each matchcan be watched for free once one has established an account on Bayern’s website.

Bayern II (U-23s) 3-0 VFB Eichstätt, Matchday 6

Position: 14., 7 points
Now THAT is more like it. With a second win in a row, Dante’s Bayern now have 7 points and have escaped the relegation zone of the Regionalliga Bayern. That is not the only good news, though. The Brazilian head coach gave defender Cassiano Kiala, midfielder David Santos Daiber and right back Vincent Manuba their first appearances since their long term injuries, with the latter two looking fairly solid upon their returns. Furthermore, late summer signing Kim (not to be confused with the senior team’s Kim) was also able to make his debut in the second half.
It was clear to see, however, just how much Daiber’s control in midfield helped Bayern’s play in this match. The first 45 minutes were the most dominant of Dante’s reign thus far, as the Bavarians circulated the ball well and dominated the match. This set the stage for some individual brilliance to give Bayern the lead, which happened when midfielder Bogdan Olychenko scored an Olimpico (a goal straight from a corner) to give Bayern the lead in the 19th minute. The lead would be doubled shortly after, as striker Anton Heinz’s beautiful free kick perfectly landed on the head of captain David Heindl to bury it in the back of the net.
Despite the control, there was not a lot of real chance creation. The first 45 minutes looked a lot like one of the games of last season under previous, defensive head coach Holger Seitz: The team has a lot of the ball, struggles to progress the ball into the final third of the pitch and relies on solidity at the back as well as set pieces to get the result. But it was certainly a step up from the previous matches of the season, in which Bayern had struggled for any control.
That control did go somewhat when Daiber and Manuba exited the field at half time, done in order to manage their game time as they aim to return to full fitness. The game became more hectic, Bayern lost the ball a lot more in cheap ways and there were little periods of sustained possession. The game state still suited Bayern, though, as it allowed the team to counter attack more with a comfortable 2-0 lead. Eventually, fellow 16-year-old substitutes Filip Pavić and Bastian Assomo combined to score the 3rd goal and seal the deal.
And what a goal it was, too. Pavić had come on for Kiala, who had struggled in physical duels all days, and demonstrated that he was clearly ahead of his older teammate at the moment. Hopefully Kiala can regain the sharpness and physical superiority that made him so highly rated at the academy. As the game became even more end to end, Dante decided to burn his last sub to bring on the speedy Assomo. The gamble paid off when, Pavić, not for the first time, coolly carried the ball up the field. He disrupted their pressing scheme, they dawdled when it came to approaching him and Pavić used it to great effect to release a phenomenally timed, line splitting pass to release Assomo to go through on goal. The latter then demonstrated his speed and strength to get away from the defenders before also showing the wisdom of an experienced striker, allowing the goalkeeper to commit in diving at him before coolly finishing under his left arm to score the goal.
Bayern U-17s 6-2 Ingolstadt U-17s, Matchday 5

Goals: 0:1 Schreyer (14.), 0:2 Maric (26.), 0:3 Ciglar (54.), 1:3 Qadi (58.), 2:3 Qadi (66.), 2:4 Hiseni (75.), 2:5 Krasniqi (79.), 2:6 Hoffmann (90.+1).

Position: 1., 15 points
This was perhaps a win that was less pretty than the team’s 3-2 win over 1859+1 last weekend, despite the higher scoreline, but it still ended up as a comfortable victory. There was some rotation in this match, as U-19 player Matteo Marić started for the Bavarians while Linus Ludwig dropped to the bench and Hiseni got the start this time, but it would be captain Tim Schreyer who would pounce on a mistake by the opposition goalkeeper to net the first goal of the match. Striker Krasiqi then won the ball with great pressing and showed admirable calm to control the ball rather than blast it at goal before finding Marić for a tap in. Ciglar’s goal also followed through winning the ball close to goal, before Bayern committed the same blunders as last week, letting a 3-0 lead get reduced to a 3-2 one in the space of minutes. Unlike last week, the team was able to extend the lead again by scoring multiple times and eventually finished the scoring in added time of the match to make it 6-2. The team has a large lead in the table for the first phase of the season.
Bonus: U-16s start season with a bang

The U-19s may not have played this weekend, but the U-16s finally started the new U-17 Bayernliga season. And they did so with a bang, winning 4-0 against 1. FC Schweinfurt’s youth team. They were 2-0 up within 11 minutes, missed multiple chances before sealing in the second half.
Head coach Can Ünal had this to say: “Overall, it was a deserved victory and a decent start to the season. We were very aggressive and attacking from the beginning, but we need to create more dynamic situations throughout the entire match.”
