According to a report from NFL insider Albert Breer, the Atlanta Falcons have put in a request to interview Detroit Lions COO Mike Disner for their president of football operations vacancy.
The Falcons
are going through a complete rebuild after firing coach Raheem Moore and general manager Terry Fontenot earlier this week. As part of their rebuild, they are doing a front office reorganization, which includes this newly-created president of football operations position.
Disner has been a key member of the Detroit Lions’ front office for nearly a decade. He originally joined the Lions in 2019 after spending six year as the Arizona Cardinals’ director of football administration. He was originally Detroit’s vice president of football administration—overseeing the team’s salary cap and player contract negotiations. In May of 2022, he earned the promotion to Chief Operation Officer.
Disner has been a key part to many important decision for the organization, but none bigger than his input as part of the small circle of people responsible for hiring general manager Brad Holmes and coach Dan Campbell. Disner is widely considered the person who “found” Holmes as he was looking through potential candidate interview videos created by the NFL. Disner has also been credited by Calvin Johnson for getting him back in the good graces of the franchise after being ostracized due to contractual disputes following his retirement.
Nowadays, Disner serves several roles within the Lions organization, working on both the football and business side of the franchise.
It’s unclear if the Lions will grant the Falcons an opportunity to interview Disner. But one thing to keep in mind: former Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is considered the favorite to win the job. Additionally, the Falcons have put in a request to interview 49ers executive Josh Williams for the job, as well.
