The National Women’s Soccer League announced their first awards of 2026 for the month of March and both Southern California NWSL clubs earned top honors as selected by the NWSL Media Association, and the NWSL’s on-air broadcast talent.
Angel City hold the top spot in the NWSL standings with nine points through three matches in March with the most goals scored and the highest goal differential in the league.
The impactful start has been led by the Icelandic forward, Sveindís Jónsdóttir, who leads the league
in goal contributions with three goals and four assists as a dangerous piece of Angel City’s front line. Jónsdóttir also had a potential goal of the season with a screecher from the top of the penalty area in Angel City’s last match against the Houston Dash that no defender could get close to saving.
Along with Jónsdóttir’s incredible form Angel City has seemed to fully realized their identity under their head coach Alex Straus who earned the NWSL Coach of the Month award for his club’s undefeated start. The offensive identity is dynamic and has been patient in taking advantage of defensive mistakes while also proving to always threaten their opposition.
Angel City face their biggest test of the season thus far with a road match against the always strong Orlando Pride on Friday, at 5 p.m. PST available for streaming on Prime Video.
Just down the freeway the San Diego Wave have put forth a solid start as well earning nine points across four matches with three of those victories occurring in the span of one week with a win on Sunday, Wednesday and Saturday.
All three of the victories had game-winners by the Wave’s newest rookie and NWSL Rookie of the Month, Lia Godfrey.
The 24-year-old forward signed with the Wave out of the University of Virginia and has quickly earned the trust of Wave head coach, Jonas Eidevall, for her versatility and strong combination play in the final third that has kept her open in dangerous positions in front of goal.
Godfrey scored her first goal in a match against the Utah Royals with a late game-winner in the 87th minute as a substitute. She then started in the next two matches and combined remained dangerous in front of net complimented by the Brazilian forward, Dudinha to her left.
All three of Godfrey’s goals have been the game-winners for the Wave. While Godfrey has primarily played on the right wing for the Wave, she also featured as a 10 in the Wave’s most recent victory against the Chicago Stars.
