Week 12 was full of exciting games, but the race for the Mountain West Championship and the season-end awards still remain a bit murky. Did anyone in the Mountain West cement their spot as one of the top
players in the conference? Let’s take a look at this week’s top performers.
Offensive Player of the Week
Lucky Sutton (San Diego State)
Sutton was very efficient in San Diego State’s 17-7 win over Boise State. The junior running back carried the ball 25 times for 150 yards to help the Aztecs seize first place in the Mountain West standings. Sutton’s performance allowed the Aztecs to control the ball for the majority of the second half and keep their defense fresh for the majority of the game.
Defensive Player of the Week
Murvin Kenion III (Nevada)
The senior defensive back had a career day for the Wolf Pack who won their first conference game of the season in a 55-10 drubbing of San Jose State. Kenion intercepted two passes that he returned for 39 yards to help Nevada head coach Jeff Choate get his first Mountain West win in two seasons.
Special Teams Player of the Week
Ky Woods (Nevada)
The junior running back had a spectacular kick return that he took 99 yards to the house. The touchdown was the final nail in the coffin for the Spartans, as it gave the Wolf Pack a 55-10 lead.
Newcomer of the Week
Anthony Colandrea (UNLV)
Colandrea continued his spectacular season with a solid performance in UNLV’s 29-26 win over Utah State. He completed 24 of 43 passes for 276 yards and a touchdown. He also added 29 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The win keeps the Rebels’ hopes for a Mountain West Championship alive.
Freshman of the Week
Carter Jones (Nevada)
The true freshman quarterback had the best performance of his young career to lead Nevada to a convincing victory over San Jose State. Jones was efficient, completing 16 of 19 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns. This game showed the potential of the young quarterback and what the Wolf Pack might have if they can continue to develop talent around Jones.
