In this series, BFW looks back at all the members of the 2014 World Cup-winning Germany men’s national team — players and coaches — reflecting on their performance back then and checking in on where they are today. Today we have the assistant branch manager from back in the day, the man few expected to rocket suddenly to stardom…Hansi Flick.
Hansi Flick’s role in 2014
As Joachim Löw’s assistant since August of 2006, Hansi was the second man in charge of the Germany national team throughout its glorious rise. By 2014, he and
Löw had been there for a while, with notable performances in each of the major tournaments they were a part of together.
Flick was regarded as a tactical genius and was the set-piece specialist as well for the tournament in Brazil, and stepped up to the role of DFB sporting director after Germany’s victory — the role currently held by Rudi Völler.
What is Hansi Flick doing now?
Flick, of course, had his incredible run with Bayern Munich and followed that up with his own German men’s national team tenure — though that ended in disaster. The 61-year-old is now in charge at FC Barcelona, whom he has led to successive LaLiga titles.
Flick also closed the Anthony Gordon deal for the Catalans, and extended his contract this Spring while proclaiming that Barça would be his “last club.”
Life is good for the 61-year-old. And he’ll always be a Bayern legend.
