Back home at the right time. The New York Liberty are in Brooklyn for the foreseeable future following a brief road trip. They were on the road Tuesday night to face the Chicago Sky, and their late rally fell short as they lost 93-86.
The opponent tonight is on a great run and has its sights set on the WNBA Finals. The Indiana Fever are charging up the standings and have a great chance at capturing the two seed. They didn’t help the cause after they lost on the road to the Dallas Wings on Thursday
night.
The Liberty enter Saturday’s matchup needing a win to strengthen their playoff positioning, while Indiana can further cement its place near the top of the standings with another victory over New York.

Liberty vs. Fever: Head to Head
The lights are bright and a Liberty win would go a very long way in the standings. New York won the first matchup 83-75 on June 6 before Indiana responded with wins of 108-88 on July 18 and 106-92 on August 11.
“I don’t think it’s just another game, I think we can prove tomorrow that we can beat these kind of teams, that we can play our style,” Leonie Fiebich said. “Sometimes we let the other teams dictate how we play, so I feel like we got to go out there and show how we want to play.”
The Liberty have been outworked and outplayed by the Fever recently, and if they want to get back to the Finals, they’ll very likely have to go through Indianapolis.
Back-to-backs, three games in four nights, travel across multiple countries and time zones. It’s no fun and it’s a mental test, in addition to a physical one. The Indiana Fever are in the midst of a five-game road trip that’s included Atlanta, Toronto, Dallas, New York, Chicago.
Saturday is the first leg of a back-to-back for the Fever and Sunday will be their third game in four days. The life of a basketball player can be a stressful one.
What Should We Expect?
In the last Fever game, Indiana punished the Liberty in transition and it’s something Chris DeMarco mentioned the team will need to be better at. Indiana plays at a breakneck pace and if you’re not dialed in on defense, they’ll make you pay for it.
That starts with Caitlin Clark. The discourse around Clark is gonna be here until the end of time, but at least we get some great basketball in between the… everything else of it all. Clark is first in the league in assists, fourth in scoring, and a highlight factory every time she’s on the scene. She’s making a late push for the Most Valuable Player award and if she continues to play at a high level, the Fever will be contenders for years to come.
Having Fiebich back gives the Liberty defense a much-needed boost. She’s been out for over a month and New York’s defense has suffered dramatically as a result. We’ll see how the Liberty utilize Leo, and it’ll be interesting to see how she looks next to Rebecca Allen. That duo has only played eight minutes together this season, and that’s a pairing that has the potential to be excellent for New York. They’ve got length, athleticism, and can both take on lead assignments on defense.
That duo will have their hands full with Kelsey Mitchell. Mitchell now has the WNBA record for most consecutive games with at least 20 points. She’s also second in the league in scoring at 24.6 points per game. Like Clark, Mitchell is making a late push for the MVP award and is the most lethal perimeter scorer in the game. It doesn’t take much for her to heat up and the Liberty will cycle through a series of defenders to try and keep her off balance. It won’t be easy.
Breanna Stewart finally got out of her slump. In the Sky game, she finally shot above 40 percent from the field for the first time in two weeks. She got most of her attempts at the rim, and if the Liberty can continue to find her opportunities in the paint, good things will happen.
Player to Watch: Aliyah Boston
Assuming she plays, of course, Boston is listed on the injury report, and it sounds like it’s one of those things you list when you’re thinking of giving someone a rest day. Quietly, Stephanie White has been managing Boston’s minutes. Over AB’s last seven games, she’s only played above 30 minutes twice. As it happens, both games went into overtime. Like Clark and Breanna Stewart, Boston is heading to Berlin to play for Team USA in the FIBA World Cup in a few weeks. AB will be a big part of USA Basketball’s plans going forward and this year will go a long way in determining her path forward.
On the court, Boston gives the Fever a great interior presence and is becoming a credible three-point shooter. Defenses have to pay attention to Boston on the perimeter and the more she adds to her game, the more the Fever can break into that top tier of the WNBA. On defense, Boston is a lot to handle on the inside as she can make things very hard for post players to score.
Can Jonquel Jones Control the Interior?
Like Boston, Jones is officially listed as questionable on the injury report. However, JJ has said she’ll be out there tonight. And Lord knows the Liberty need her. Jones gives the Liberty a much-needed post scorer, connector on offense, and rim deterrent on defense. Jones’ health will go a long way in determining the Liberty’s fate this season, and perhaps beyond.
JJ’s box score numbers for the last Fever matchup were solid, but in watching, she didn’t make the Fever feel her. Against a team like Indiana, you’ve got to be able to bump them, annoy them, and make things incredibly challenging on them. If the Liberty want to reestablish themselves as title contenders, they’re going to need to play tougher and more physically. With the playoffs fast approaching, right now’s as good a time as any to start.
