West Virginia wrapped up today’s doubleheader with a 3–0 win over Akron, their first clean sheet of the season. The Mountaineers struck first in the 16th minute when Abbey Olexa buried a chance off an assist from Anna Hauer to take an early lead.
The game broke open just three minutes into the second half, when Ava Arnold doubled the lead on an assist from Taylor White. Moments later, White got on the scoresheet herself, finishing a pass from Roxanne Vilain to make it 3-0 in the 51st minute.
White
was the star of the match, finishing with both a goal and an assist, but WVU got contributions from all over the pitch. Olexa, Arnold, Hauer, and Vilain were all involved in the goals, and the team’s depth showed as the Mountaineers rolled through rotations without losing momentum. The attack piled up 19 shots (8 on goal), and created eight corner kicks while keeping Akron pinned in their own end.
The match was as one-sided as the score sheet suggests. Mackenzie Smith and Bailey Herfurth split time in net for the Mountaineers, but neither goalkeeper was tested as Akron failed to record a single shot. WVU’s back line kept the Zips quiet, securing the shutout to close the night.
The Mountaineers will travel to Happy Valley on Sunday to take on No. 14 Penn State. Kickoff is set for 3PM Eastern, with the match televised on the Big 10 Network.
