Are your Georgia Bulldogs taking a step up in competition against a team that’s had this game circled on the calendar for months, and that needs a bounce back performance in the worst way? Then you could probably use a drink. I can help you with that.
I’ve watched this Oklahoma team against UTEP and Michigan. I’m still not exactly sure what to make of them. They’re like the opposite of a bumblebee. Don’t catch my meaning? I swear I can clear it up. As connoisseurs of motivational tropes know, the humble
bumblebee allegedly should not be able to fly. It has a bulky body and tiny wings that should not carry it aloft. Yet by sheer determination it manages to lift off the ground.
Oklahoma on the other hand looks the part of a top ten football team. John Mateer was on all the preseason watch lists, and has a pair of Biletnikoff award watch listers in Isaiah Sategna and Trell Harris to throw to. The Sooner defense is stacked with dudes at every level. This is a team that looks like it should take off and fly like a Hardier jump jet. Yet there it sits, unable to get off the ground. A team that looks built to soar but which remains stubbornly unable to get off the ground.
My worry is that at some point this team starts to play like it’s capable of, and that the fateful turn could take place this weekend in Athens. I’m ever so slightly filled with dread by the number of Bulldogs fans who are taking this game for granted based on the Sooners’ performance so far. But I’ve watched enough football to know that Brent Venables’ defense tend s to get better as the season progresses, and this one is already pretty good. I
I also know that Oklahoma offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle has worked with John Mateer for the entirety of his college football career at Washington State and now in Norman. At some point, there’s a reasonable chance he figured out how to get a reasonable degree of production out of his star QB.Again, if the Bulldogs give the Sooners too many chances via turnovers or other errors, this could be the week the Sooners Schooner gets rolling, and none of us wants that.
As we discussed yesterday, about the best things the Bulldogs can do to win this one are to avoid turning the ball over and force the Sooners to do just that. If the ‘‘Dawgs can force an early turnover, get the crowd into the game, and stake themselves to an early lead, I like our odds. Because the last thing an offense that’s struggling to consistently create yards wants is to play from behind. That’s when the risk of pressing increases, and things can go from bad to worse in a hurry. I want that badly for the Oklahoma offense.
To review, the game plan is to grab the momentum early, take the lead, and then lower the booming the Sooners as they try to come back.
And what’s the appropriate cocktail for lowering the boom on the Sooners?
Why a Sooner Boomer, of course. A drink designed to discombobulate the Land Thieves. It’s a twist on the classic gimlet gin cocktail, with a sweet, tart flavor that pairs nicely with a good herbal gin.
You’ll need:
- 2 oz. of gin (I’m not picky on the brand or type, just use your own discernment and good judgement)
- 1 oz fresh lime juice
- 1 oz of raspberrysyrup
- Fresh raspberries for garnish
Add the gin, lime juice, and raspberry syrup to a cocktail shaker filled with ice, shake until well mixed and chilled.Strain the mixture into a rocks glass, garnish with the raspberries, and enjoy. Until later…
Go ‘Dawgs!!!
