Trainer Jose Benavidez Sr spends some time talking to Fight Hub TV about his thoughts on Canelo’s loss to Terence Crawford as well as the future of his son David, who will be taking on Anthony Yarde on Nov. 22. Check out some excerpts of what he had to say below with the full video interview in the link at the top.
Benavidez Sr on if he was expecting more from Canelo in Crawford fight
“I was expecting a lot more. I was expecting Canelo to knockout Crawford to be honest with you because it’s three weight divisions — well (Crawford) did fight one time at a higher weight division but
to me it’s three weights. He had to go up a lot in weight and that’s what I was expecting but at the end of the day I have to give respect to Canelo, he has done so much in boxing that it will be hard for somebody else to achieve and make.
“He said himself that he tried but the body did not respond and I’ve been saying the body is worn out. Canelo’s young but in boxing life he’s worn out…a lot of people don’t know but in the gym is where you leave all your energy and work so hard. One fight is just a victory, you know, and then you go to shine, but in the gym is when you leave everything.”
On his son feeling like he should’ve been the one to fight Canelo, believing he would’ve also beaten Canelo
“That’s the reason he was asking for $200 million dollars, because he knew that it was a big risk and at the end of the day he lost to a smaller guy.”
On whether his son can make 168 for a potential fight with Crawford
“I think he’s super young, still. Yeah, I think it would be a little bit hard but he could definitely do 168. We didn’t move to 175 because of the weight, we moved because of the opportunities and he only fought two fights at 175. After Anthony Yarde he’ll be in shape and, yeah, he has to work and watch his food and nutrition a little bit more but I think he could do 168, but I could be wrong.
“But at the end of the day we’re here, we’re focused on Nov. 22, that’s a tough, tough fight, one of the toughest in his career. Anthony Yarde hit Kovalev with one good punch and stumbled him and we’re not underestimating nobody, we’re focused on that fight but anything can happen. To be honest, after Anthony Yarde, then we can sit back and talk.”
On how they view Yarde as an opponent
“I think this is the hardest fight for David’s career. He’s been in that weight, we see that he has a lot of power, and it’s a tough, tough fight.”
On plans for David after his fight with Yarde
“We sat down with Turki Alalshikh and we had to do kind of like a plan and like I said, we’re not underestimating nobody, what we’re focusing on right now is Anthony Yarde, but there was talks about fighting Anthony Yarde, the next one would be Beterbiev, the second one will be Bivol, and the third one Zurdo Ramirez and the other one will be Opetaia. So those are the talks that we had, so those are really, really super tough fights so we got to focus on beating the first guy and then we can go to the next one.”
