Florian Wirtz arrived at Liverpool in a £125M transfer from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025 marked out as a generational talent, a player who led Leverkusen to the previous year and was named the Bundesliga’s player of the season in the process.
While there have been moments of quality and Wirtz is clearly an exceptional talent, a month into season two and the consensus is that he simply hasn’t delivered performances in line with the price tag—or that would justify the Reds building a side
around him.
While there’s no sign yet Liverpool have given up on him and there remains hope his work-rate and some solid underlying numbers will lead to everything clicking, it’s perhaps not a surprise then to hear chatter that Bayern Munich are keeping an eye on things.
At least that’s the story according to TeamTalk, who claim sources are telling them the Bavarians are keeping a close eye on Wirtz given there was a great deal of consternation at Bayern over missing out on Wirtz in the first place when he left Leverkusen.
The chance to potentially right that perceived wrong two summers on should the Reds decide they’re ready to move on in 2027 is said to be the motivator—though to be completely honest, it seems like a story that was likely to emerge regardless the reality.
Which is to say that no matter how Liverpool might actually feel about the situation or how seriously Bayern might actually be about wanting to still bring in Wirtz if he was avaialable, it’s a story the rumour mongers would be certain to put out into the world.
Hopefully, then, Wirtz can click at Liverpool—and the sooner the better. Not just for the sake of Liverpool and Wirtz in the present, but also because it might help to avoid the rising tide of Wirtz back to Germany stories that will be inevitable if he doesn’t.
