It is July. The summer season will be nearing the end. Training camp will begin soon for the Cleveland Browns. As the team begins year two of their rebuild, the offense will look much different than last season. The entire unit received a facelift, from the offensive line to the skill position groups. The only one that remained untouched is the quarterback room, except for the addition of Taylen Green.
It’s not an exaggeration to say that since the team has returned, the CBrowns have yet to find the long-term
solution at the position.
Quarterback Deshaun Watson is on his last chance to prove he is a starter, and Shedeur Sanders has to prove to Cleveland that he’s worth investing in despite a lackluster rookie campaign. As the team went through OTA’s and mandatory minicamp, conflicting reports have come out about the quarterback competition.
One side has Watson in the lead for the job; the same can be said for Sanders. Other reports determine the job is as close as can be.
In terms of reps, it’s clear both Watson and Sanders will get a fair share of opportunity to prove themselves once training camp starts, but as of now, it’s hard to make assumptions on who is in the lead so far.
Head coach Todd Monken hasn’t tipped his hand on who is the starter, but the real test for the starters will begin with the joint practice sessions with the Buffalo Bills. Anyone can look good in a helmet, shorts and a jersey. It’s a different story when the pads come on, and you are going against an opposite-colored jersey.
What the quarterbacks did in the spring matters to a degree; however, it shouldn’t hold much weight once training camp starts. Once camp starts, both Watson and Sanders will be back at square one in terms of proving who will be the starter. Under Kevin Stefanski, it would be highly unlikely that Sanders and Watson saw extended reps once the preseason starts, but Monken is running the show now. Sanders and Watson will likely get a few series, at least, in terms of the preseason games.
The most likely scenario is that the quarterbacks will be under final evaluation when the Bills come to Berea to practice and in the preseason game between the two. That is the best-case scenario for when the starting quarterback will be decided.
When do you think Monken should make the decision on the starting quarterback position?
