Columbus Clippers 6, Toledo Mud Hens 4 (box)
Dylan File was rocked for four runs early in this one, and though they tied the game, the bullpen eventually let it get away against the Cleveland Guardians’ Triple-A affiliate. Sound familar?
File gave up a leadoff homer to Cooper Ingle to start the game, and the inning did not improve. A single and then a Gleyber Torres error sparked a three-run rally before the Hens got out of the inning.
Torres singled to start the bottom half of the inning, and Max Clark and Ben Malgeri were both hit by pitches.
Three straight strikeouts against Guardians starter Logan Allen followed.
Max Burt hit a solo shot in the second to make it a 4-1 game. In the fourth, Andrew Navigato singled and after Torres flew out, Clark and Malgeri followed with singles. That made it 4-3, and an Eduardo Valencia sacrifice fly scored Malgeri to tie the game.
Meanwhile, File settled in and threw four scoreless innings after the first. Konnor Pilkington allowed a go-ahead run in the sixth. Yoniel Curet allowed an unearned run in the top of the eighth, but considering he allowed a double and a walk on a wild pitch before collecting an out, I’d argue he earned it.
Malgeri: 2-3, R, RBI, BB
Torres: 1-2, BB
Clark: 1-4, R
File: 5.0 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 5 H, 0 BB, 4 K
Coming Up Next: The Hens head to Iowa to take on the Cubs starting on Tuesday night at 7:38 p.m. ET. Justin Verlander is tentatively set to make his first rehab appearance in that game.
Erie SeaWolves 5, Chesapeake Baysox 2 (box)
The SeaWolves bounced back to tie this series over the weekend.
Joe Miller got the start. The lefty allowed a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, but otherwise he was pretty good, striking out seven against one walk in 4.2 innings of work.
Chris Meyers answered back with a solo shot in the bottom of the second. In the third, Brett Callahan and John Peck both walked and then pulled off a double steal. Thayron Liranzo knew the assignment, and lifted a sacrifice fly to score Callahan and tie the game up 2-2.
The SeaWolves have been running wild, and they continued to do so in this one. Andrew Jenkins doubled to open the bottom of the fourth. A ground out moved him to third, and Peyton Graham singled him home for a 3-2 lead. Graham then stole second, one of three bags he swiped in this one. He proceeded to steal third as E.J. Exposito drew a walk, and Graham scored on a ground out to make it a 4-2 lead. He would steal his 29th bag of the year later in the game.
Meyers tripled in Justice Bigbie in the seventh to make it 5-2. Duque Hebbert, Tanner Kohlhepp, and Moises Rodriguez combined for 4.1 no-hit innings to close this one out in style.
Meyers: 3-4, R, 2 RBI, 3B, HR
Graham: 2-3, R, RBI, BB, K, 3 SB
Peck: 1-3, 2 BB, K, SB
Miller: 4.2 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, BB, 7 K
Coming Up Next: The SeaWolves head to Richmond to face the Flying Squirrels next week.
Lansing Lugnuts 10, West Michigan Whitecaps 1 (box)
Gabriel Reyes and Logan Berrier were both mauled in this one as the Whitecaps’ miserable season continues to unfold.
The Whitecaps got on the board early as Juan Hernandez led off the top of the third with a single. He moved to second on a ground out, and third on a Samuel Gil single. Garrett Pennington stepped up and singled the run in, but that was all they’d get.
Reyes was cruising along until the fourth, when he melted down with a pair of walks to start the frame, instigating a five-run inning. Berrier took over to try and clean that up, but then he gave up four runs of his own in the fifth. Thomas Bruss surrendered a run in the bottom of the eighth to complete the scoring.
Gil: 3-4, K
Strong: 1-3, BB, K
Reyes (L, 0-4): 3.1 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 H, 3 BB, 2 K
Coming Up Next: The Whitecaps will try and put a 4-23 month of May behind them and turn the page in June. They’ll be home against the Dayton Dragons for Lou Gehrig Day at LMCU Park on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. ET.
Palm Beach Cardinals 10, Lakeland Flying Tigers 6 (box)
The Flying Tigers fell to 25-25 after a tough week in Palm Beach as the Cardinals won the series 5-1 with another victory on Sunday.
Lakeland got out to a good start. Jude Warwick singled with one out in the top of the first, stole second base, and took third on a throwing error. Beau Ankeney walked, and Edian Espinal stayed hot with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Espinal was picked off but Ankeney scored on the play.
Nick Dumesnil cracked a solo shot to open the third inning to make it 3-0.
Charlies Christensen made a nice short start, tossing three scoreless innings, and Win Scott followed with three scoreless of his own. So it was still 3-0 heading into the seventh when Joe Ruzicka, the Tigers’ 16th rounder out of Belmont College took over. He gave up two runs to make it a 3-2 Lakeland lead.
Lakeland came right back, taking advantage of wildness from the Cardinals’ bullpen. In the top of the eighth, Zach MacDonald was hit by a pitch and Javier Osorio walked. Anibal Salas lined out, but Jack Goodman lined a single to left to load the bases. Hunter Dobbins walked to force in a run, and Dumesnil, staying hot since his recent return from the IL, doubled in Osorio and Goodman.
So it was 6-2 Lakeland, but the Cardinals then scored eight runs in the bottom half to storm back. Andrew Pogue was the main victim, with catcher Sergio Tapia coming on with the white flag in the middle inning to pitch out the inning.
Dumesnil: 2-5, R, 3 RBI, 2B, HR
Espinal: 3-5, RBI, K, CS
Warwick: 1-4, R, BB, 3 K, SB
Christensen: 3.0 IP, 0 R, H, 2 BB, 2 K
Coming Up Next: The Fort Myers Mighty Mussels come to Lakeland for a set starting Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. ET.
