You don’t go on the road and pull off a gutsy overtime win over a top 15 team without a total team effort. Yet still, some undaunted ‘Dawgs are bound to distinguish themselves above and beyond their fellows. Those legends of the fall are your MVDs: the most valuable ‘Dawgs from Georgia’s 44-41 win over the Tennessee Volunteers.
Offense:London Humphreys. I labored hard on this one. I could have easily gone with Gunner Stockton. Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowen’s each had successful days running the
ball and Josh McCray had the game-winner on a tough run. Colbie Young and Zachariah Branch each made clutch catches. But Humphreys shook off an early drop to catch first a 31 yard pass to put Georgia inside the ten yard line then that phenomenal 28 yard touchdown pass to help send the game to overtime. That was one whale of a catch, enough for me to hand Humphreys the metaphorical MVD trophy.
Defense: Joenel Aguero. Aguero put the secondary on his back in the first half, and snagged a clutch interception. He finished with 4 tackles and 2 pass breakups as well. On a day when nearly every member of the UGA secondary had at least one “oof” moment against a high-powered Volunteer receiving corps, Aguero had one of his best games as a ‘‘Dawg.
Special Teams: Peyton Woodring. Don’t get me wrong, Brett Thorson had a great afternoon punting and both Zachariah Branch and Sacovie White-Helton had nice kick returns. But Woodring was 3 of 3 on field goals and every single one of them was critical, as were his 5 extra points. Georgia has been spoiled with excellent kickers over the years, but Woodring is making a case to be remembered as one of the best of that storied bunch.
Go ‘Dawgs!!!
