This is one of those classic late-season dilemmas for Bayern Munich: protect your No. 1 or keep him sharp. On one hand, Neuer is the established leader and still one of the best big-game goalkeepers in the world. With a massive clash against Paris Saint-Germain looming, the instinct is to wrap him in bubble wrap and avoid any unnecessary risk. At his age and with his injury history, even a routine Bundesliga match carries some level of danger.
On the other hand, rhythm matters — especially for a goalkeeper.
Neuer thrives on timing, positioning, and command of his back line, and those things can dull without consistent minutes. Sitting him entirely could introduce just enough rust to matter in a high-stakes European tie.
That is where Urbig enters the conversation. Giving the young keeper a start against Mainz could preserve Neuer while also rewarding Urbig’s development. However, it is not without trade-offs. Mainz is not a guaranteed walkover, and Bayern Munich cannot afford a slip if the title race is still mathematically alive.
The balanced approach might be a compromise: start Neuer to maintain sharpness, but manage his minutes if the match is under control. Still, if the priority is PSG above all else, trusting Urbig could be the smarter long-term play.
So what matters more—keeping Neuer fresh or keeping him in rhythm?
