According to a report from Süddeutsche Zeitung (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), the decision for a potential contract extension for Manuel Neuer at Bayern Munich lies solely in the hands of the goalkeeper:
Should Manuel Neuer decide to extend his contract at FC Bayern until 2027, no one at the club will stand in his way. The club’s bosses would even ‘hand him the pen’ to sign the contract with considerably more conviction than last time. Within Bayern, they believe that since Neuer no longer plays for the national team, his body has been getting enough rest and no longer struggles with injuries. A final decision is expected around Christmas to early new year. As things stand, a contract extension is the most likely outcome, which means the Jonas Urbig plan to succeed Neuer would be postponed to summer 2027.
At this point, Neuer looks fully worthy of a new deal, so it will be up to whether or not Neuer wants to continue to play. If he does, he has a home. At this point, the only other question in this situation is if Jonas Urbig wants to wait around another season to take the reins.
Bayern Munich is starting to really hit the rough-and-tumble portion of its first half schedule and Der Klassiker is at the forefront of it all.
Sure, Bayern Munich passed its test against Eintracht Frankfurt before the last international break, but Bundesliga matches against Bayer Leverkusen and SC Freiburg, Champions League games vs. Club Brugge, Paris Saint-Germain, and Arsenal, plus a DFB-Pokal tilt vs. FC Köln all are on tap before the end of November.
In a nutshell, buckle up.
