Newcastle United are among the clubs tracking AFC Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi ahead of the summer transfer window, with the Argentine set to become a free agent on July 1.
The 28-year-old’s contract situation is making him one of the most high-profile defenders available for fee this summer. That’s why the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle are monitoring him, while interest from Italy has intensified of late.
According to Corriere dello Sport, a representative from Senesi’s agency, ROOF, attended
Juventus’ 4–0 win over Pisa in mid-March. The report goes as far as to describe the visit as a sign that Juventus are serious about pursuing a move.
Juventus are said to be competing with Roma for his signature among Serie A clubs with interest in the defender, while LaLiga’s Barcelona have also been credited with interest.
In England, Newcastle and Aston Villa are considered significant contenders in what is developing into a multi-club race with many more serious names involved than one would imagine.
Newcastle are expected to prioritize defensive reinforcements this summer because of Fabian Schar and Kieran Trippier’s contract expiring, as well as the likely sale of Tino Livramento.
Former Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness recently told Football Insider that he believes Newcastle could win the race for the centre-back, citing the potential partnership with Malick Thiaw.
No agreement has been reached for now, and Senesi has not publicly indicated his preferred destination, or if he could even make a 180-degree turn and sign an extension to remain at Bournemouth.
At the end of the day, if he leaves, everything about landing the Argentine defenseman will have to do with agreeing to terms on his contract length, wages, and convincing the man about the sporting project he’d be joining.
