UConn women’s basketball closed out its final game before the postseason with an 85-49 win over the St. John’s Red Storm at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night. The Huskies capped off their 11th undefeated regular season in program history and also go perfect in conference play for the third straight year and 13th time overall.
The announced attendance of 9,612 was the largest in St. John’s history, though it ended up being a pro-UConn crowd.
Azzi Fudd led the Huskies with 14 points while Allie Ziebell
chipped in with 13 points. Brooklyn native Serah Williams had a big game in the Big Apple, finishing with 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Meanwhile, Sarah Strong did it all with 11 points, seven rebounds, six steals and four assists.
UConn started the game on a 13-2 run as the five starters accounted for its first six baskets. St. John’s briefly pulled back within single digits after scoring two quick baskets but the Huskies answered with six straight points.
In the second quarter, UConn’s offense faced little resistance. The Huskies ripped off an 8-0 spurt on four straight layups. St. John’s kept leaving wide-open lanes to the basket, which UConn capitalized on. It eventually took a 23-point lead into the half.
Out of the break, the Red Storm found a spark. They got their offense going and traded baskets with the Huskies over the next 6:33. The hosts couldn’t get enough stops to mount any sort of a comeback bid, though. UConn eventually put together a 9-0 run to push the lead past 30 points and after an uneventful fourth quarter, the Huskies came out with a 36-point victory.
With the win, UConn improves to 31-0 overall and 20-0 in the Big East. Next, the Huskies will have five days off — their longest break since Christmas — before the Big East Tournament. They’ll take on the winner of the 8-seed versus 9-seed matchup in the quarterfinals on Saturday at Mohegan Sun Arena.
