1) Just… slow
Everything looked sluggish coming out. Defense was a step behind, except when they were going offsides. Offense was plodding, which works well for Kaytron Allen, but not for anyone else. It resulted in exactly the kind of game Northwestern was looking for: Grindy, making every mistake mean that much more, and forcing Penn State earn every single yard.
The approach worked, and, when it came time for Penn State to gain those last three yards, they simply couldn’t.
2) It’s Kaytron time
After many calls from those on the outside,
Kaytron Allen finally started in this game. He was as productive as he’s been all season, which is unsurprising.
3) Adding insult to injury
Pardon the pun, but, if the misery weren’t enough, Drew Allar went down with what appears to be an ankle injury. Ethan Grunkemeyer came in to attempt the game saving conversation, which of course did not work.
