You’ve got no shortage of bad things to choose from during the early days of the season, but one of the worst things about the Packers stumbling out of the gate is that everyone else in the NFC North has as well.
The Vikings lost their starting quarterback early in Week 1, but the Packers couldn’t take advantage — as we well know. They let the Vikings survive, and now they’re 3-0.
The Bears, meanwhile, lost their own quarterback a week later, dropping a game to the Vikings as a result. They managed
to keep things afloat the following week, but they remain vulnerable.
The Lions, for their part, have staggered to a 1-2 start, the same as the Packers.
All of this, of course, was avoidable. The Packers went into the season with a patchwork offensive line — and we’re being offensive to patchwork quilters with that description. They have more self respect than the Packers showed trotting out that bunch. But that’s beside the point. It didn’t have to be this way. They’re taking steps now to fix it, but there was no need to wait.
Kevin Zeitler was sitting at home for all of training camp, as was Mekhi Becton. Laken Tomlinson’s been chilling on the Cowboys’ practice squad, too. Sure, there have been some unexpected bumps in the road — nobody planned for Aaron Banks to battle an injury for weeks and weeks and weeks, and nobody expected Zach Bako-Bewele’s knee to implode — but there was plenty of opportunity to mitigate those possibilities before things turned into a disaster.
Now the Packers have dug themselves a hole. They’re trying to dig out, but it’s better to not put yourself in a hole to begin with.
