Newcastle United continues to assess midfield options as the club is already planning future transfer windows, with Matthias Jaissle already working with a significantly reshaped group following the departures of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.
According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, Newcastle was among several Premier League clubs to make contact regarding Como midfielder Lucas Da Cunha before his recent breakthrough with France. Chelsea, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Brighton also contacted
Como over the 25-year-old.
“Como midfielder Lucas Da Cunha has re-emerged on Chelsea’s radar following his stunning France breakthrough, though TEAMtalk understands interest in the 25-year-old predates his international recognition,” Bailey wrote. “Sources have confirmed that Chelsea, Manchester United, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Brighton had all made contact regarding Da Cunha.”
Da Cunha’s profile has risen considerably after he earned a place in Zinedine Zidane’s first France squad and subsequently started in the nation’s victory over Belgium during the international break.
However, Bailey reported that Newcastle’s interest predates that international recognition. His ability to play deeper after beginning his career in more attacking positions could make him an intriguing option for a Newcastle squad that values versatility.
Da Cunha joined Como in early 2023 as primarily a winger or attacking midfielder, but Cesc Fabregas gradually converted him into a deeper midfield role. The change has helped Da Cunha establish himself as Como captain and ultimately break into the France setup.
Premier League interest has persisted despite the midfielder recently signing a new five-year contract with Como. Bailey reported that Chelsea remains particularly attentive, while Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth are also monitoring his situation. Serie A clubs Atalanta, Napoli and Roma have shown interest as well.
Da Cunha’s new agreement means Como is under no immediate pressure to sell, while his international breakthrough could further strengthen the Italian club’s negotiating position if Newcastle or another suitor eventually makes an offer.
It’s unclear whether Newcastle has submitted a bid or entered advanced negotiations at this point. Newcastle’s involvement for now seems to be limited to previous contact and continued interest as several clubs evaluate Da Cunha’s development.
Would Da Cunha add something Newcastle’s current midfield is missing, or should the club prioritize other positions first? Share your thoughts in the comments.
