The 49ers are set to reunite with Dante Pettis.
San Francisco’s second-round pick in the 2018 draft was one of a host of wide receivers who tried out for the team on Tuesday following a rib injury to Mike Evans.
And the Niners are giving Pettis a second chance with the team, with Jordan Schultz reporting he will sign back with San Francisco.
Pettis showed plenty of initial promise in his rookie season with the Niners eight years ago, finishing with 467 yards and five touchdowns, numbers that remain
career-highs for the former Washington standout.
His most memorable moment as a 49er came in the following season when he caught a game-winning touchdown in a Week 3 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
But Pettis found opportunities to impress limited thereafter. He did not play in any of the final five games of the regular season or in the run to the Super Bowl that followed.
He played in five games in the 2020 season before being waived.
Since his departure, Pettis has had spells with the New York Giants, Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints. He had a brief stint with the Buffalo Bills during training camp this year.
Despite their injuries at the receiver position, the 49ers will hope to not have to rely on Pettis much. However, with his experience and knowledge of the offense, it is a reunion that makes sense for a team in need of greater depth in its pass-catching ranks.
