Do you remember back around 2011 to 2013 when CM Punk was obsessed with main eventing WrestleMania but never got that spot in favor of John Cena, The Rock, and The Miz? There was some fan speculation at the time that Vince McMahon intentionally skipped over Punk because once his dream was achieved, he would be more likely to leave WWE. I am reminded of that theory again after hearing Cody Rhodes’ interview today on The Sportster.
After hyping up the Street Fighter movie, Cody was asked about what
his motivations are now to perform in WWE after winning the championship and finishing his story at WrestleMania 40. Cody first explained what it feels like to be in that position.
“My sister said, ‘Be careful what you wish for ’cause at this rate you’re going to get it.’ And when that happens, when the thing you want, the biggest dream you have in your life, which is to be the WWE Champion, happens, then it’s fun to go through the process of almost being a kid again and going, what else do I want? What else do I want, and what is the work that it’s going to take to get there?”
QB1 said he spoke to legendary NFL quarterback Tom Brady about what approach he took towards competing after he reached the top of the mountain in his sport. Brady told him the goal becomes to win for everyone else. That’s now what Cody wants to do in WWE, assuming his acting obsession doesn’t get in the way.
“We’re at a, no pun intended, a crossroads in my career. I’m not gonna lie to the wrestling fans. I’ve got the bug for TV film. I’m obsessed. There might be some things that come up where I leave for a minute to do. There might be some things we haven’t talked about. I want that to grow as a storyteller and an [artist], and always be able to bring that back home to a WWE that now allows me to do it, with Nick Khan and Triple H allowing that element of it.
But when I’m at WWE, part of where I’m at now is, I want everybody else to win.”
In other words, now that Vince McMahon no longer owns WWE and is out of the picture, Cody has a lot more freedom to pursue his passions outside of wrestling, and he very well may take time off to do it. It sounds kind of like what Drew McIntyre has been doing this summer.
Do you think Cody Rhodes is doing a good job of helping everyone else win in WWE? Will the Hollywood bug grow large enough to take his soul him away from WWE for significant periods of time? Let me know your thoughts on Cody’s answer and his future with WWE in the comments below, Cagesiders.
