If there was any doubt about Bayern Munich’s intentions in the DFB-Pokal, the numbers from its 6-1 demolition of 1. FC Magdeburg should put those concerns to rest. Bayern didn’t just win this one; it completely overwhelmed its opponent from beginning to end.
The Bavarians finished with 63% possession, outshooting Magdeburg 19-9 while putting eight attempts on target compared to just two for the hosts. The expected goals numbers were particularly eye-catching, with Bayern registering an enormous 3.98
xG against Magdeburg’s 0.86. That is a massive difference in attacking quality and the opportunities created.
Perhaps the most telling statistic was touches inside the opposition penalty area. Bayern recorded an incredible 64 touches in Magdeburg’s box, while the hosts managed just 11 in Bayern’s. That’s not simply territorial dominance; that’s sustained pressure and an attacking performance that kept Magdeburg’s defense under constant stress.
Bayern also created five big chances, converting four of them, while Magdeburg managed just one. The visitors completed 674 passes at 90% accuracy, compared to Magdeburg’s 362 at 84%.
Magdeburg did manage to get nine shots away, but only two tested Bayern’s goalkeeper. They also failed to earn a single corner, while Bayern won six.
The takeaway? This was Bayern operating at a completely different level. Six goals, nearly four expected goals, overwhelming possession, and relentless pressure in the attacking third.
The DFB-Pokal can be unpredictable, but Bayern made sure there would be no giant-killing story this time around. Magdeburg got its moment in the spotlight, but Bayern made it abundantly clear who was in charge.
