The opening weekend for the 2026-27 season has been defined by injuries. After stars Paolo Banchero and Jalen Durenboth received diagnoses this weekend that will keep them off an NBA court for weeks, Sunday’s game action followed up with a slew of injuries to Oklahoma City Thunder players Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace and Jaylin Williams, as well as Jalen Suggs of the Orlando Magic.
Jalen Williams
The most gruesome of tonight’s injuries was to the lower leg of OKC Thunder star forward, who was hoping
to bounce back from a season where he only played 33 games due to health. After Williams was wheeled off the court on a stretcher during OKC’s 108-101 victory over the Clippers, it’s very possible that he’s played his last game this season. (Warning: the replay of the injury isn’t for the faint of heart).
The loss leaves the Thunder without their second option, a talented all-around player with career averages of 18.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.4 assists, who was pivotal in OKC’s championship run just two years ago during his age-23 season.
Cason Wallace
Jalen Williams’s Thunder teammate Cason Wallace also left Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury after getting hit by a moving screen from Isaiah Jackson early in the first quarter. Wallace became the full-time starter for OKC after the team moved on from Lu Dort this past offseason.
The Thunder guard, who was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team last season, is not only an integral part of OKC’s present, but their future as well, having signed a five-year, $139 million rookie extension just a week ago.
Jaylin Williams
The last in the trio of tonight’s injuries for the Thunder was Jaylin Williams, who left the game after five minutes due to wrist soreness. With the Thunder roster thin at forward, Jaylin Williams was a key reserve who helped OKC retain their size advantage in the frontcourt when they went to the bench.
If his teammate Jalen is unable to return to the court this season, it will open up an opportunity for Jaylin to increase his role from last year, when he averaged 7.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 19.6 minutes of play.
Jalen Suggs
Another player who was coming off an injury-plagued season, Jalen Suggs went down with a non-contact injury to his right knee as he was going up for a breakaway lay-in late in the fourth quarter of the Orlando Magic’s 111-102 win against the Knicks on Sunday.
With star forward Paolo Banchero already out for 4-6 weeks, the injury to Suggs will be an early-season test for the depth of the Magic’s roster. His last-season stats of 13.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 5.5 assists don’t tell the whole story, as Suggs is one of the best perimeter defenders in the league.
Get Well Soon
I wish all these players a full recovery and successful rehabilitation from injury — especially Jalen Williams and Jalen Suggs, who both spent the offseason recovering from injury-plagued campaigns and preparing themselves for healthy seasons, only for the dream to be ripped away in less than a week.
Good luck and Godspeed.
