Germany is one of most interesting teams heading into this summer’s FIFA World Cup. Die Mannschaft has been on a bit of a hot streak, accumulating nine straight wins. However, the matches haven’t all been pretty and there is still lots of negative sentiment around this team. Despite the success, losing Lennart Karl feels like a massive blow and could really hold the team back. Despite all the ups and downs, Leon Goretzka still believes in this team.
“We want to put things right this summer. The memories
of the past two World Cups don’t bother us. It’s true that the fans lost faith in us a little bit, and we would love to win them over again. That’s the biggest motivation for me and for the whole team. We’re not among the top favourites, let’s be honest. But as Germany, a big footballing nation, there are still high expectations of us. We have some top players and, if everyone is fit, we can achieve a lot at the World Cup. If we’re able to grow as a team during the tournament, then the sky’s the limit”, Goretzka told FIFA as captured by @iMiaSanMia.
The expectations are absolutely massive and the criticsm from German fans is greater than ever. Perhaps it is somewhat warranted, but on the other hand, Germany was a bad call away from a potential Euros title in 2024.
It’s good to see that the team has seemingly moved past the last two World Cup failures. That sort of frustration and pressure can hang over a team and you can see what happened with Argentina after Lionel Messi finally won the Copa America with Argentina. It was like a weight lifted off the team, and it really let the team can play with freedom. If Germany can move past their failures, perhaps they can fully unlock their potential once again.
