No. 15 Florida State hosted Rice for a noon matchup in its final nonconference game of the season.
It was the Seminoles’ first noon game of the season, and with the Tallahassee heat, FSU utilized its depth with plenty of substitutions throughout the game.
Florida State’s starting lineup featured Kate Ockene in goal; Jaida McGrew, Tanner Strickland and Claire Rain on the back line; Shaneil Buckley, Peyton McGovern, Joelle Jung and Sam Erbach in the midfield; and Nyah Rose, Wrianna Hudson and Ryder Ajeto
up front.
Three Seminoles were not in Tallahassee due to competing in the FIFA U-20 World Cup. Bridget Mutipula and Janet Okeke are playing for Canada, while Nyanya Touray is playing for Italy.
Hudson had an early opportunity at 1:24, but her shot went wide right.
Rice had an opportunity at goal at 8:42 that resulted in a corner kick. The Owls found the back of the net off the corner, but the goal was disallowed following video review due to a foul on Ockene.
The Seminoles used the overturned goal as momentum, quickly getting the ball back down toward Rice’s goal and creating opportunities of their own.
The first half was physical, with both teams combining for 11 fouls and two yellow cards.
Anaiyah Robinson had another opportunity for the Seminoles at 39:51, but FSU entered halftime still looking for its first goal.
Florida State switched up its lineup to start the second half, with Kai Price entering the game.
At 55:30, Ajeto had a great opportunity to put the Seminoles on the board, but Rice goalkeeper Megan Sweeney came up with another save.
FSU earned back-to-back corner kicks at 73:42 and 74:37. The second opportunity resulted in the Seminoles finally finding the back of the net, with Hudson heading in the cross to give FSU a 1-0 lead.
Once again, Florida State found its first goal of the game in the second half.
Following the goal, Erbach and Hudson connected on another great play that created an opportunity for Buckley, but her shot missed the goal.
The Seminoles kept the momentum and continued keeping the ball around Rice’s goal, but the Owls eventually answered.
Rice tied the game at 81:30 when Sloane Popov found the back of the net to make it 1-1.
FSU appeared to answer quickly when Ajeto found the back of the net, but the goal was overturned due to a handball, keeping the game tied.
Neither team was able to score again, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Seminoles will host NC State next Friday to open ACC play.
