Netflix announced today that legends Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao will face off once again on September 19th at the Sphere in Las Vegas.
After years of near-misses, Mayweather (50-0, 27 KO) and Pacquiao (62-8-3, 39 KO) finally met in May of 2015, with “Money” emerging the clear victor against an injured “Pac-Man.” The intervening decade has seen Mayweather make a killing on the exhibition circuit while making a pair of quick pit stops to beat Andre Berto and Conor McGregor in the paid ranks;
he’s reportedly set to warm up for this rematch against Mike Tyson sometime this spring.
Pacquiao, for his part, sits at 5-2-1 since that evening. Initially retiring after losing his WBA title to Yordenis Ugas in 2021, he returned last year to fight Mario Barrios to a draw. He too has an exhibition on the docket against Ruslan Provodnikov on April 18th.
I’ll say the same thing I did about that exhibition: if they insist on continuing to fight at this stage of their careers, they might as well fight each other.
“I already fought and beat Manny once,” said Mayweather. “This time will be the same result.”
“Floyd and I gave the world what remains the biggest fight in boxing history. The fans have waited long enough – they deserve this rematch, and it will be even bigger now that it will be streamed live globally on Netflix,” said Pacquiao. “I want Floyd to live with the one loss on his professional record and always remember who gave it to him.”
