The Houston Texans are reuniting with veteran defensive tackle Naquan Jones, per Aaron Wilson. Jones appeared in three games for the San Francisco 49ers this season at defensive tackle after the team suffered a rash of injuries at the position.
Jones last appeared in Week 5. But with the return of James Thompson and Mykel Williams, the team no longer needed a nose tackle in the next two games.
Jones was with Houston in training camp. The Texans released him in August before he joined the Minnesota
Vikings. That’s where the Niners poached Jones from a little more than a month ago.
This opens a practice squad spot for the 49ers, who will inevitably feel ahead of this week’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Defensive tackle CJ West, out since September 23 with a bone chip in his knee, is one of the candidates to return from injured reserve once the team returns from its bye. West could return to the active roster, and Sebastian Valdez could head back to the practice squad.
Valdez was promoted to the active roster to begin October. You run the risk of losing him to another team, but it’s a numbers game, and somebody will be out of a job once more bodies return from injury in the second half.
The 49ers practice on Monday, so we could find out the roster move as soon as Monday morning.
