The No. 1 Texas Longhorns (31-2) lost their 29-game winning streak on Sunday to the No. 15 Texas A&M Aggies (24-11), but had already secured the Lone Star Showdown series win on Saturday.
On Friday, the Aggies scored first with an RBI single, but the Longhorns responded quickly with a leadoff solo home run from junior center fielder Kayden Henry, followed by another solo home run from junior shortstop Viviana Martinez nukes a home run into right field.
In the top of the second, Texas A&M tied the game
with its second RBI single before taking the lead again in the the top of the third with a run-scoring double from A&M’s shortstop Kk Dement and a two-run home run by left fielder Paislie Allen to go up, 5-2. Texas countered with the aid of the senior second basemen Leighann Goode hitting a RBI single through the left field line and Martinez drove in two runs down the right field line to even the game.
The Aggies punched back with a two-run home run from Wark putting A&M. In the bottom of the inning, senior right fielder Ashton Maloney slapped a RBI single into left center. In the top of the fifth, first basemen Mya Perez brought in a run with a single to to right center extending A&M’s lead to 8-6. As the fifth inning continued, Martinez hit her second home run and freshman designated player Hannah Wells tied the game at 8-8 with an RBI single into left field. In the bottom of the seventh, Wells reached on an RBI fielder’s choice for a walk-off 9-8 win.
On the mound, junior righty Teagan Kavan (13-0) struggled over 4.2 frames, collecting 4 strikeouts while giving up seven hits and five runs while senior righty Citlaly Gutierrez closed the game out for Texas pitching 2.1 innings to only give up 6 hits and 3 runs in the Texas 9-8 victory.
On Saturday, A&M took an early lead on a sacrifice fly. The Longhorns countered with RBI singles from Martinez and senior catcher Reese Atwood. A&M answered back in the top of the third with an RBI single into right center before a solo home run into left field from Atwood marked the final run of the game in the 3-2 win by Texas.
On the mound, Wells (5-2) tossed 5.2 innings, snagging three strikeouts while giving up seven hits and two runs while Kavan (2) nabbed the save, pitching 1.1 frames with one strikeout.
For the third straight game, the Aggies took the lead in the first inning, this time 3-0 after Wark knocked a two-run home run into left center. Texas responded in the bottom of the first when Martinez stole home, but A&M’s momentum continued with a solo home run from Dement.
The Longhorns stayed quiet until the bottom of the fifth with Martinez slapping two-run double into right center to narrow the deficit to 4-3, but the hot bats for the Aggies continued in the top of the sixth thanks to an RBI double and an RBI single. Two errors by Texas committed increased A&M’s lead to 9-3.
Texas answered back in the bottom of the seventh with a RBI sacrifice fly from Goode, an RBI groundout to the second basemen from Martinez, and back-to-back home runs from Atwood and junior first baseman Katie Stewart, although it wasn’t enough to complete the rally in a 9-7 loss.
On the mound, Kavan (13-1) had another poor outing, giving up eight runs on 11 hits over 5.2 innings before Wells finished the game.
