Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer has offered his thoughts on the ongoing debate over whether Jonas Urbig should already replace Manuel Neuer as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, making it clear that the youngster is viewed as the long-term successor to the legendary captain.
While Neuer’s future remains a topic of discussion, Bayern are also working to ensure Urbig continues to develop without rushing the transition. The 22-year-old has already gained valuable experience since arriving from
FC Köln and has made his first appearances for the German national team.
Speaking to Bild, Hainer praised Bayern’s recruitment of Urbig, highlighted his relationship with Neuer, and confirmed that the young goalkeeper will receive more playing time this season.
“First of all, I have to say that our sporting management did an excellent job. We signed one of the best young goalkeepers around in Jonas Urbig. He’s getting game time, he has a great harmony with Manuel Neuer. Jonas has already played his first games for Germany. I’m convinced he’ll become #1 for Bayern and Germany. We’ll see what happens in the coming weeks and months. The club is speaking to both goalkeepers. Be assured that we’ll manage the situation very well. We have already discussed that Jonas Urbig will get more games than he did last season,” Hainer said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
The key takeaway is that Bayern are planning for Urbig’s future while maintaining respect for what Neuer continues to bring to the team. The club has not announced an immediate change in its goalkeeping hierarchy, but Hainer’s comments reinforce the expectation that Urbig’s role will grow.
With discussions ongoing with both goalkeepers, the coming months could prove decisive in determining how Bayern manage the transition between one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time and the man they believe can eventually succeed him.
