After embarrassingly finishing in 7th place in the 2024/25 Bundesliga season and previous manager Marco Rose kicked out, Rasenballsport Leipzig took a chance on signing Ole Werner from Werder Bremen. The artificial construct of a football club may have comfortably finished in 3rd place in the 2025/26 season and secured Champions League football, but it might not be enough to keep Werner in his position.
According to a report from Marca, former Bayern player and current RCD Mallorca head coach Martín
Demichelis has signed as new head coach for the former SSV Markranstädt:
Deal closed between Martin Demichelis and RB Leipzig, pending official confirmation from both clubs.
However, Sky Sports reporter Philipp Hinze claims that the sacking of Werner, and therefore the signing of Demichelis, is far from done:
Exclusive: Martin Demichelis’s exit clause amounts to around 2.5 million. The possible deal is not through yet. They’re not that far along. Clause not activated yet.
But: Demichelis is Leipzig’s top candidate in the event of Ole Werner’s dismissal. Werner is on shaky ground & is highly controversial at Red Bull. The 38-year-old has not yet been relieved of his duties. Decision imminent, talks ongoing.
If the move were to come to fruition and he could stand to work for a disgusting construct like Rasenballsport, this would be a huge break for Demichelis in an up and down managerial career. Following his retirement as a player at Málaga CF in Spain in 2017, he stayed for one year as an assistant coach. In 2019, he returned to Munich and managed Bayern’s U-19s and then the U-23s in the 3. Liga.
Unfortunately, he was the one in charge as the Bavarians’ U-23s throw away a 10-point lead over the relegation spots with two months of the season to go to get relegated to the Regionalliga, the fourth division of German football. He would stay as manager until December 2023 when River Plate, another former club, hired him as manager. 18 months at the Argentinian giants were followed by less than 12 months at Mexican club Monterrey FC.
It took nearly a year after the failed Monterrey stint for Demichelis to get a new job, but RCD Mallorca would eventually take a chance on Demichelis as they fought against relegation from La Liga. Despite a historic victory against Real Madrid, the Argentinian was unable to save Mallorca from the drop. The club kept faith in him and rewarded him with another contract until 2028 on May 28, 2026.
As much as this would be a fortunate break for Demichelis, however, it would be aggravating for Mallorca. Losing Demichelis just two weeks after he signed a new contract would be unfortunate.
