Mountaineers Abroad: Former WVU players collide at the G League Winter Showcase

Mountaineers Abroad is our weekly check-in on former West Virginia basketball players now playing professionally around the world. Each Tuesday, we’ll track minutes, box scores, and anything that stands out along the way. If you see the 🎥 icon, that’s your shortcut to available game footage or highlights.

This week covers games from last Tuesday through yesterday, with Mountaineers logging time across the G League, Europe, Asia, and beyond.

Showcase Week, Teddy Keeps Rolling

This week’s G League games were played at the Winter Showcase in Orlando, the league’s annual in-season scouting event and the opening stretch of the regular season. Eight teams advanced from the Tip-Off Tournament into a single-elimination bracket to compete for the Winter Showcase championship, while the rest of the league played regular-season games outside the tournament.

Teddy Allen didn’t need much time to settle in once those games started counting.

Allen poured in 34 points in Rio Grande Valley’s 127–101 win over Westchester on December 20, leading all scorers as the Vipers broke the game open after halftime with a dominant third quarter. It was Allen’s fifth 30-point game of the season, counting both Tip-Off Tournament and regular-season play. Toby Okani saw limited minutes for Westchester in the same matchup as the Knicks couldn’t keep up once RGV found separation.

Cleveland closed out a 2–0 run by beating the Rip City Remix in the Winter Showcase Championship Game, securing the event title. McNeil logged rotation minutes across both games as the Charge capped their Orlando stay with a trophy.

Edwards finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks in a 97–75 win, helping Melbourne control the paint from the opening stretch. Illawarra struggled to generate clean looks inside, and Edwards’ presence made finishing at the rim difficult throughout the night.

Heavy Minutes and Close Games

Several Mountaineers saw extended minutes across Europe this week.

Tarik Phillip was part of a tight EuroCup contest as London pulled out a 98–96 overtime win against Beşiktaş, a result that helped stabilize the Lions in a tightly packed group stage. London relied on experienced guards as the game extended past regulation, and Phillip continued to see minutes in European competition before turning back to domestic league play later in the week.

In the UK, Gabe Osabuohien put together an active stretch. He contributed in European North Basketball League play before turning in a strong domestic performance against Surrey, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds.

On the Women’s Side

Two former Mountaineers on the women’s side were in action overseas this week.

Kyah Watson logged steady minutes for Partizan in a lopsided road win, finishing with eight points, four assists, and two steals as they handled Orlovi without much trouble.

Kylee Blacksten turned in one of the bigger individual lines of the week, scoring 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in ŽKK Zagreb’s road win over Brod na Savi. She added three steals and stayed active on both ends as Zagreb closed it out late.
