Following their disastrous double header sweep at the hands of the Rockies, the Mets designated Tommy Pham for assignment. In another move, the club signed outfielder Austin Slater to a deal after electing free agency earlier today. He was DFA’ed by the Marlins earlier this month.
Pham, you may recall, played for the Mets in 2023 and had some unkind words for the team after getting traded to the Diamondbacks prior to the trade deadline. Specifically, he called that team the “least-hardest working
group of position players I’ve ever played with.” Pham signed with the club in late March and was called up on April 12 after a few games in St. Lucie. His impact for the club since returning was less than nothing, as he appeared in nine games and went hitless in 13 at-bats, striking out in seven of those instances. He walked once and scored one run, ending his second stint with the team with a .000/.071/.000 slash line after posting a 1.4 fWAR in 79 games for the Mets in 2023.
This is hardly the move that is going to turn around a team that has lost 15 of its last 17 games, but it was overdue. They will possibly turn to the recently-signed Slater for help, though it has not been confirmed yet whether he’ll take Pham’s spot on the 26-man roster. The 33-year-old appeared in 12 games for Miami this year, going 4-for-23 with one run batted in and one run scored. If nothing else, that is more than Pham did in New York.
