After a week off, the Virginia Tech Hokies return to the field for a rare Friday night game at Lane Stadium this weekend. The Hokies host the California Golden Bears in ACC action.
It feels weird to say
that Virginia Tech is hosting California or Stanford in ACC play. Last season, Tech made the trip West to face Stanford, coming away with a 31-7 win. On Friday, the Hokies face a Cal team that is 5-2 and 2-1 in conference play.
Theoretically, Virginia Tech should be big underdogs. Right? The Golden Bears also have a talented freshman quarterback in Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele. Sagapolutele is one country’s top freshman passers and appears to have a bright future.
But, no, the Hokies are actually favored this weekend. According to DraftKings Sportsbook, VT is 4.5-point favorite over Cal.
- Spread: Hokies -4.5 (-112)
- Over/Under: 49.5
- Moneyline: Hokies (-205), Golden Bears (+170)
Why is Virginia Tech favored? Travel could be one thing. Cal must make a long cross-country trip to Blacksburg, after playing one week ago. There’s also the fact that California hasn’t really beaten anyone. Its two ACC wins are over 1-6 Boston College and the national joke that is the Jordon Hudson-led North Carolina Tar Heels. Cal also has a win over 1-7 Oregon State, Texas Southern and San Diego State. Their best win is over Minnesota.
That’s knock a knock on the Bears. Have you watched Virginia Tech?
The Hokies and Golden Bears kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday at Lane Stadium. It’s highly likely that this will be the last time they are favored this season.
