The Los Angeles Rams appeared to have control of Sunday’s matchup against the Denver Broncos, but a series of pivotal plays helped Denver rally for a 30-26 comeback victory.
The Rams had opportunities to put the game away, but mistakes, a controversial penalty and two late interceptions ultimately swung the game toward Denver.
Here are five plays that played a major role in the Broncos’ comeback.
1. Emmanuel Forbes’ Unsportsmanlike Conduct Penalty on Special Teams
With just over five minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Rams appeared to have created a favorable
special-teams situation. Denver’s Kaden Katsis muffed the punt and recovered at the Broncos’ 15-yard line before being tackled at the nine.
However, Emmanuel Forbes was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. The 13-yard penalty was enforced from the previous spot, moving the Rams back and forcing them to punt again from their own 12-yard line. The second punt traveled to the Denver 48, giving the Broncos much better field position.
Instead of potentially pinning Denver deep after the muff, the penalty essentially gave the Broncos another opportunity with favorable field position.
2. Matthew Stafford Throws a Pick-Six
The biggest swing came with 4:49 remaining.
Leading 19-16, Matthew Stafford and the Rams had a chance to grab more momentum after a poor third quarter showing. Instead, Stafford attempted a short pass toward Kyren Williams that was intercepted by Denver safety Talanoa Hufanga.
Hufanga did not simply stop the drive. He returned the interception 66 yards for a touchdown, giving Denver a 23-19 lead after the extra point.
The turnover was a huge momentum shift and injected life throughout the Broncos sideline and fanbase.
3. Bo Nix Finds Pat Bryant for 39 Yards on 2nd-and-20
Denver’s offense delivered a huge conversion on its game-tying drive.
With 3:26 remaining and facing second-and-20 from the Denver 25, Bo Nix connected with Pat Bryant for 39 yards. Bryant took the pass all the way to the Los Angeles 36, flipping the field and keeping the Broncos’ comeback hopes alive.
The play was particularly damaging because the Rams had Denver facing a long-yardage situation. Instead of forcing a punt or another difficult third-down attempt, Nix found Bryant for a chunk gain that put Denver deep into Rams territory.
4. Controversial DPI Call on Josh Wallace
A few plays later, the Rams appeared to come up with a potential stop.
On third-and-6 from the Los Angeles 11-yard line with 1:15 remaining, Nix’s pass intended for Bryant fell incomplete. Josh Wallace was flagged for defensive pass interference, however, giving Denver four yards and an automatic first down.
The call was a clear miss. Not only was it an interception by Josh Wallace but replay showed that it was actually offensive pass interference (if anything) on Pat Bryant. Bill Vinovich strikes again…
From there, the Broncos were able to run additional clock and get the go-ahead score.
5. Stafford’s Final Pass Picked Off
The Rams still had one final opportunity.
After Stafford connected with Konata Mumpfield for a 48-yard touchdown with 3:38 remaining, Los Angeles cut Denver’s lead to 23-22. The Rams then needed one more defensive stop and a chance to complete the comeback themselves.
That opportunity came late, but Stafford’s final pass was intercepted by Hufanga, who had already delivered the pick-six earlier in the fourth quarter. The turnover ended the Rams’ final possession and secured Denver’s comeback victory.
For the Rams, the loss wasn’t determined by one play. The Forbes penalty, Stafford’s pick-six, Bryant’s 39-yard catch, the Wallace DPI and the final interception collectively created the sequence that allowed Denver to erase a late deficit and escape with a four-point victory.
